Poem 14

Any poem I start with your name
smells like fire.
It is like living in a house that
has been burning for years,
it is like living with someone who is always with me
yet lives far away.

But still,
I pray for your eyes in which
hope lives.

A hope,
like a father going gray
waiting for his daughter—
This poem is a gift—
spring is sprung! It’s been years since
anyone had the courage to smile…

What part of this dream
would make you come back to me Watching you, standing out of the frame
and hugging gently the man who used to say
—“we’re together though one of us is always absent”—

Now you can open the windows
and welcomes the sun…apologize to the birds for your absence!
Maybe on that day the citrus will bloom
or the garden will suck you into its heart.

Climb out from your picture,
walk around,
and read the poem of the man who smells smoke.

Poem 15

What a strange world is the animals’ world.
Their lives simple,
neither poet nor in love…

Sometimes,
they travel with a flock, so as not to be alone.
They travel to a place where
they can cry themselves to death
or
they can die often and anonymously.
Sometimes,
they kill their own kind
and no one asks why.

If we were not poets,
I would watch your wild eyes as the days pass.
Sometimes,
you would be so wild I would become
Your prey—
easy to stalk but not easy to lose!
You would be a predator with
a cruel heart
like those beasts
with sensuous eyes.
I have lost my flock,
you’re the best hunter.

We poets were not in love,
and if we had been,
it would not have saved us.
